On February 4th, 1913, the University Daily Kansan reported that the 6th national sorority was being founded at KU. A local sorority, Delta Psi, had petitioned to become a chapter of Sigma Kappa. Ida May Fuller Pearce, one of the original Sigma Kappa Founders, moved to Kansas after graduation from Colby College. With her sorority experience on her mind, Ida May wanted to give the same bond of sisterhood to her nieces. On April 2, 1913, 20 members were initiated and became Xi Chapter of Sigma Kappa Sorority. Ida May's nieces were among this first pledge class.
The newly installed sorority remained at the same house use by Delta Psi at 1247 Ohio. It only took a few years before a larger chapter house was needed. In 1924, Sigma Kappa became the first sorority at KU to build a new house. This house was located at 1645 Edgehill and is currently occupied by Sigma Delta Tau Sorority. Edgehill was the home for Sigma Kappa for many decades until it became necessary to have a larger home. In the mid-1950's Sigma Kappa purchased the Ellsworth home at 1325 West Campus Road and this remains our home today. Fred Ellsworth was the Executive Director and Secretary/Treasurer of the KU Alumni Association for 39 years from 1924-1963. The original house was built in the early 1900's and was the first house built on our block of West Campus Road.
Sigma Kappa has a proud tradition at KU and we are preparing to celebrate our chapter's Centennial. It is the only Sigma Kappa chapter outside of the original chapter at Colby College to be started by one of the original Sigma Kappa Founders. As we approach our 100th anniversary we are all well aware of the legacy we create with our time at KU and the rich history of our chapter.
